Throughout my life of involvement with colour technology and alongside my interest in traditional oil painting, I have often played with the abstract quality of colour harmony. Until recently I did not develop this activity, but then came FRACTALS.

My fractal patterns are unique. How can this be, when a fractal produced by a mathematical process must be precisely the same no matter who does it? Well, that is true so as far as the structure of the pattern is concerned, but the colour is a different matter. There are two popular fractal-producing programmes which can be downloaded from the internet, and which are used by virtually everyone who enjoys creating fractal patterns. But I do not use them.

I have joined together my computer programming skills and my experience with colour and have created a system of generating fractals - the Mandelbrot Set and the Julia sets - overlaid with a colouring method which is entirely my own. I call it FRACTASIA. This programme could be used by anyone to produce patterns of varying effect. But manipulation of the colouring techniques, to create patterns of simple or subtle abstract beauty, can only reach full effectiveness in the hands of someone with colour designing experience.

It is for this reason that the final result, whilst having a mathematical basis, is nevertheless a true art form.

And in spite of all that, you don’t have to understand fractals to be able to enjoy the fantastic patterns.
